The 2026 CrossFit Games Are Basically a 2007 Cover Band (And We Are Fully Here For It)
Twenty years ago, a bunch of impossibly fit weirdos showed up to a ranch in Aromas, California, ran up a dusty hill, lifted heavy things, and accidentally invented a global sport. In 2026, CrossFit is throwing it all the way back. And judging by the first workout announcements, we are getting the raw, no-frills, old-school CrossFit we fell in love with.
Why this year is special
2026 marks the 20th anniversary of the CrossFit Games, and CrossFit is celebrating by going home. After years in Carson, Madison, Fort Worth and Albany, the Games return to California, landing at the SAP Center in San Jose (aka "The Shark Tank") from July 24 to 26.
But the real nostalgia hit lands earlier. Day 1 kicks off Wednesday, July 22 with offsite events out near Aromas, at a barn setting that looks and feels like the original Ranch. The athletes are, quite literally, headed back to where it all began.
For the newer crowd: the first-ever Games in 2007 had roughly 70 athletes and 150 spectators. It felt less like a world championship and more like a backyard barbecue with barbells. The winners took home a whole 500 dollars. The very first workout was drawn from a "hopper," which was an old peanut roaster, because of course it was.
The workouts are out, and they are gloriously old-school
CrossFit has confirmed the 2026 Games will recreate the original 2007 programming: the 2007 Hopper, the Ranch trail run, and the CrossFit Total. Here is what we know so far.
Event 1: The throwback grinder** 1,000 m row, then 5 rounds of: 25 pull-ups and 7 push jerks (W: 85 / M: 135)
No fancy machines nobody owns. No mystery objects. Just a rower, a bar, and a rig. Beautiful.
Event 2: The Ranch run** 7,200 m trail run
Straight up a hill in the California heat, exactly like 2007. The photo of athletes charging up that golden, sun-baked slope is pure CrossFit archaeology.
The lifting block: the CrossFit Total** Heaviest successful Back Squat Heaviest successful Shoulder Press Heaviest successful Deadlift 3 attempts at each, scored separately, worth 50 points each
The CrossFit Total is the ultimate "just pick up heavy stuff" test. It ran in 2007 and has only appeared a couple of times since, so seeing it back for the anniversary is a proper deep cut.
The community reaction: absolute chaos (the good kind)
The comment sections did what comment sections do best.
Reigning Fittest Man on Earth Jayson Hopper, upon hearing the original hopper is returning, essentially demanded they let him draw from it. His last name is Hopper. You cannot write this stuff.
2008 champ Jason Khalipa summed up the mood for every veteran in one line, saying it brings back memories. Meanwhile the funniest jab came from the peanut gallery, with one fan predicting a certain rowing-averse superstar would somehow land in 35th on Event 1. We will let the leaderboard settle that one.
The bottom line
Somewhere along the way, the Games got very big, very produced, and very full of gear you need an engineering degree to operate. 2026 is a deliberate reset: a row, a run up a hill, a barbell, and a peanut roaster full of destiny.
This is the CrossFit that hooked us in the first place. Twenty years later, it still slaps.
Who else is hype?
